In un clima di informale convivialità ci si aprirà al dibattito mostrando i risultati delle proprie ricerche e discutendone con l’obiettivo di scoprire ed interagire su temi nuovi e stimolanti tra persone con diversa estrazione accademica ed interessi. Grazie alla ciclicità della programmazione, un venerdì ogni mese, i DSS Lunch Seminar si pongono l’obiettivo di diventare un appuntamento fisso per alimentare nuovi interessi di ricerca e nuove collaborazioni. Voi portate il pranzo, noi vi offriamo da bere!   Abstract The production system of official statistics is increasingly multi-sourced. Alongside sample surveys and administrative data - which are now firmly embedded in the process – National Statistical Institutes are investing in “nontraditional” data sources, often referred to as big data. These are data essentially produced for other purposes, for instance remote images, mobile phone signals, or signals transmitted by ships for safety reasons. Their use in official statistics is not straightforward, as they require transformation and processing tasks to meet the quality standards. Nevertheless, their characteristics have the potential to help National Statistical Institutes respond to the growing demand for more timely and granular statistics, and to address the continuous request of new statistics that capture the complexity of constantly evolving social and economic phenomena. This seminar will provide an overview of current research at Istat in this area. To provide a concrete example, it will be illustrated the project concerning the use of AIS (Automatic Identification System) data - signals sent by ships that convey information about their position and their characteristics for safety purposes - for maritime statistics.      In allegato la locandina
