Brief Project Description:
Ever since art. 130 of the EEC Treaty of March 1957, the European Investment Bank has aimed to contribute to the development of the European Single Market by guaranteeing loans and investments to the less developed regions to support their growth. After the financial crisis of 2008, the EIB has taken on even more strategic relevance for economic recovery in the EU, and most recently the EIB group has taken on further prominence within the European strategy to cope with the Covid-19 crisis.
The project “The EIB and geographic divergence in the EU” aims to offer an empirical and theoretical background to support the activity of European institutions and to further the scope of the EIB’s activities aimed at regional convergence. It focuses on estimating the impact of public and EIB investments through a local multiplier approach, in relation to the priority objective of economic and social cohesion in the peripheral regions, in particular for those that are the object of the EU convergence policy.
Within the project, we assessed the EIB’s funds effectiveness in generate a “multiplier effect” on the real economy, in terms of economic growth and employment, as well as (if this will be possible) other EU goals such as social and environmental sustainability. This is especially crucial for lagging regions that suffered the most from the crisis, with potential impacts expected to generate spatial and economic spillovers to the other regions too.

What is STAREBEI?
