Compiling and using production network datasets to better quantify the complex national, international and global economic phenomena
The challenges that the modern world faces – such as climate change, the need for an energy transition, disturbances in supply chains – show with increasing clarity their interconnectedness on the global level. Solving these problems is difficult, not just because of their scale but also because of their complex nature: improvements in one area may lead to deterioration in another. To quantify and act on these challenges, methodologies that can handle this complexity are crucial.
Firm level (business level) production networks analysis is a methodology that has been developing in the last decade and is now reaching maturity as an innovative approach to dealing with these complex phenomena.
The webinar series will demonstrate the suitability of the business production networks approach to depict the modern economic complexity better.  twill introduce techniques for compiling business network  twillsas well as methods and tools for analysing them. Examples will be given of National Statistical Institutes (NSIs) compiling such datasets and of policy makers and academic researchers applying them for better understanding the economic relations at the national, international and global levels.
The webinar series will be given on five half-days this Autumn (see further below), covering the topics:

  • I: Case studies of successfully applying business production networks methodology to modern day economic problems
  • II: Sources, methods and practical examples of NSIs compiling business production network data at the national level
  • III: Applications and indicators to reap the benefits from the basic datasets
  • IV: Compiling and using business network data at the international (e.g. EU, etc) level
  • V: Discussion of possible next steps and setting up of potential collaborations

The webinar series is aimed at methodologists, researchers and decision makers at NSIs, international statistical bodies, academia, and national and international economic policy institutes.
